Submission to Australian Association of National Advertisers Code of ethics review

• the role of the AANA in setting higher standards for advertising portrayals
• a stronger focus across the Code on avoiding harm
• strengthening of the Code and Practice Notes on sexualisation and objectification of women
• inclusion of guidance related to the depiction of drivers of violence against women
• recognition of the cumulative impact of repeated use of stereotypes in advertising
• replacing the ‘community standards’ test for complaints with a test focused on public health and wellbeing, and avoidance of harm
• establishment of a gender equity advisory board at the AANA and/or Ad Standards
• the need for increased awareness and education on the harms of sexist advertising for industry, regulators and the community
