Women over 50

As women age, they face unique health challenges, often compounded by gender inequality and ageism.

Older women experience specific health challenges, such as menopause, chronic illness, and mental health concerns that require targeted care.

In the health system, older women’s health needs have historically been ignored by medical research and health policy. For example, while heart disease and stroke are the biggest health issues for women as they age, gender bias in heart health research means most heart studies have focused on men without considering the different impacts on women.

Beyond medical research and health care, gendered ageism also means our society lacks empowering, authentic portrayals of older women in the media and culture. This can contribute to poor body image, low self-esteem, and ultimately poorer health outcomes for older women and trans and gender-diverse people.

Financial instability resulting from systemic gender inequality such as the gender pay gap, and caregiving responsibilities also limit older women’s access to healthcare.

We advocate for equitable access to healthcare at all stages of life. We’re working to address the health and wellbeing needs of women over 50 by providing evidence-based, accessible information and promoting positive representations of older women (cis and trans inclusive) and gender-diverse people.

About In My Prime

In My Prime is a website providing quality, evidence-based and relevant health and wellbeing information for women as they age. It covers a range of topics including chronic disease, menopause, physical and mental health and relationships, to equip older women to live active, connected lives on their own terms.

In My Prime was created in partnership with The University of Melbourne, in consultation with health experts, researchers, clinicians, sociologists and the community. It targets older women and gender-diverse people with diverse experiences and backgrounds including trans women, women with disabilities, and women from migrant communities.

In My Prime also features an online gallery of nude photographs of older women. Created by renowned Australian photographers Ponch Hawkes and Jodie Hutchinson. The gallery of joyful, confident images challenges the mainstream invisibility of older women and celebrates their strength and diversity.
