Women and physical activity: GIA
Discusses the participation of women in various forms of physical activity, health benefits of physical activity, implications of inactivity, factors that promote or inhibit participation, and population groups with additional barriers. Women and men differ in their activity preferences, barriers and enablers to participation and the effects of physical inactivity. National and Victorian government strategies to promote physicial activity have been broadly aimed at the population in general. New gender-specific health initiatives and approaches are needed to increase women’s levels of participation. This will take time, as change needs to occur at the societal level to address current gender roles and how they can affect women’s ability to be physically active.
