Women and body image: Gender Impact Assessment

Discusses the factors that contribute to body image dissatisfaction among women, and the impact on women’s health through the life cycle. Explores the influence of mass media on the concept of the ideal woman and on the sexualisation of women and girls. Body image disatisfaction in women has been associated with the development of eating disorders, substance misuse, unsafe sexual behaviour, and decreased physical exercise. Discusses the national and Victorian policy context, and the need for initiatives that are both gender sensitive and age sensitive to ensure maximum effectiveness in promoting positive body image within the community.
