What MPs need to know about pregnancy counselling

Please note that this material no longer reflects the current law in Victoria. However the content may be relevant to law reform advocacy in other jurisdictions.

With reference to the Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) Final Report on the Law of Abortion, this statement reflects the joint position of 10 Victorian women’s health services. Recommends that any new abortion law should not contain a requirement for mandatory counselling or mandatory referral to counselling. Contends that abortion counselling is already occurring in clinical practice, and is a service delivery issue rather than one to be directed by law.
